Cerinthe major ‘Purpurescens’, also known as Honeywort, is a beautiful spring and early summer flowering annual with silvery green leaves and delicately curved clusters of purple bells. Growing to a height of approximately 50cm, cerinthe makes a wonderful addition to the cottage or cut flower garden. Both the flowers and the foliage of cerinthe make for an interesting and unusual addition to cut-flower arrangements. It readily self-seeds in the garden.

Cerinthe seeds have a hard outer shell so are best soaked for 12 to 24 hours before being planted 3-5mm deep in a prepared bed in a sunny to partly-shaded position. Plant seed in winter or early spring. Cerinthe is moderately frost-hardy but in areas with hard frost seed may also be planted into pots for transplanting after the danger of frost has passed. Plants should be spaced 30-40cm apart.

All our seed is open-pollinated and grown on our small and unruly plot in Central Victoria, Australia.
