Pigeon pea is a perennial legume that belongs to the Fabaceae family. It is native to tropical regions of Africa and India, but has been cultivated and naturalised in many other parts of the world.

Pigeon pea is a shrub-like plant that can grow up to 4-5 meters tall with compound leaves and yellow flowers. It is fast growing and is an important high strata, low succession tropical and subtropical agroforestry species. It’s deep taproot system helps improve soil structure and fertility, and it’s fast growing canopy provides shade and plentiful biomass.

Pigeon pea is an important food, fodder and fuel plant in many parts of the world. It is used for erosion control, as a windbreak, to fix nitrogen and as a forage crop for livestock. Also called red gram, it can be cooked and eaten.

Propagation and Growing Notes for Cajanus Cajan, Pigeon Pea:

  • grow best in well-drained soils that are rich in organic matter. They can tolerate a wide range of soil types, but they do not like heavy clay soils that do not drain well.

  • prefer warm soil temperatures of 24-29°C for optimal germination.

  • 10-14 days to germinate, but this can vary depending on soil temperature and moisture levels.

  • require moderate to high levels of water, especially during flowering and pod development. They prefer evenly moist soil, but do not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

  • require full sun for optimal growth and yield.

  • sow direct after the last frost in spring or early summer.
  • mature and produce pods in 4-5 months.
