Melia azedarach is a deciduous tree native to Australia and South-East Asia. It belongs to the mahogany family Meliaceae and can grow up to 12 metres tall with a spreading umbrella shaped canopy. The tree is characterized by its beautiful, fragrant lilac and white flowers that bloom in clusters during the spring. Following the blossoming, small yellow fruits appear. Despite their appealing appearance, the fruits are poisonous to humans and some animals. The tree has been widely cultivated as an ornamental plant due to its attractive foliage and shade-providing properties.
