Gypsophila Covent Garden seeds
I tested a shortlist of gypsophila and this was the winner for me hands down. This was the only one I let go to seed too so the seed should not have crossed. This is a tall variety with large delicate flowers on airy stems. It is beautiful, and lends an ethereal, airy feel to bouquets. It is virtually unrecognisable from the classic supermarket baby’s breath, in a good way. Mine got to nearly 1 m tall (we had great conditions in 2025) and I harvested multiple stems per plant. A florist I sold too commented that it benefited from quick dip after a few stems wilted – so assume it has a relatively short vase life – it lasted ages on the plant.
The details:
- Min 200 seeds per packet.
- Direct sow in autumn and keep moist, I put loose hessian over mine to help germination. Thin to you preferred space (I used approx. 15cm) and provide support to keep stems upright if required (I got away without it but some stems were bent).
- The plants benefit from a fairly cold winter to produce the best stems, but it’s not strictly necessary. They will stay small over the cooler months; when they develop their root system.
- Remember to let a few plants go to seed to collect your own!
Please note at this stage i am not sending to WA due to quarantine fees. I always check interstate posting requirements for other states.
