Araucaria heterophylla – Norfolk Island Pine Seeds (Pack of 30)

Description:
The Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is a stunning evergreen conifer with symmetrical, tiered branches that resemble delicate, miniature pine trees. It’s a distinctive and popular choice for both indoor and outdoor cultivation. This majestic tree exhibits a unique form and lush, feathery foliage that’s a true testament to nature’s artistry.

Size:
At maturity, the Norfolk Island Pine can reach impressive heights of up to 200 feet (60 meters) in its natural habitat, although it can be pruned to maintain a more manageable size in gardens and as an indoor houseplant.

Habitat:
Native to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, this species thrives in coastal environments with mild, frost-free climates. Its elegant form and lush foliage make it a standout in both tropical and subtropical landscapes.

Rarity:
The species survival is not threatened at all by the houseplant trade, as it is grown commercially for potted plants. However, the native, natural stands of A. heterophylla were always restricted and have been much reduced since Capt. Cook’s time. Farming, poor land management and the introduction of invasive species have reduced its population on the original three islands considerably. The main remaining stands are now within Norfolk Island National park and are therefore under some shelter. The IUCN classifies the species as vulnerable.

Propagation Notes:
Sowing: Plant seeds in a well-draining native-specific potting mix. Sow seeds with the upper 1/3 exposed above soil level. For a clear visual on that method watch this video:

Ensure consistent moisture but avoid waterlogging.
Temperature: Maintain a warm environment for germination, ideally around 70-80°F (21-27°C).
Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight or dappled shade. Young seedlings are sensitive to direct sun and should be gradually introduced to it.
Transplanting: Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into larger containers or your desired outdoor location. Ensure well-draining soil.
Note: The Norfolk Island Pine is suitable for container gardening and can be kept indoors as a houseplant when young. As it matures, it can be transitioned to an outdoor setting.

The germination time for Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) seeds can vary, but generally, you can expect germination to occur within 3 to 12 weeks under ideal conditions.

The pack includes 30 seeds. We are experiencing an 80% germination rate with these seeds under ideal conditions.
