Withania somnifera, commonly known as Ashwagandha, is an evergreen shrub that grows to about one metre in height. It has dull green leaves and produces small, green, bell-shaped flowers. Its fruit resembles a berry and matures to an orange-red colour, enclosed within a papery husk.

A well-known medicinal plant in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha contains compounds believed to help calm the brain, reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and support the immune system, particularly during recovery from illness. It may also aid in regulating blood sugar levels, improving mood, memory, stress, and anxiety, while potentially enhancing muscle strength and fertility.

Ashwagandha has also been found to support individuals with an underactive thyroid by promoting thyroid function.
