Strawberry guava is a shrub growing in my garden for many years. From the Myrtaceae family it is native to tropical South America.
Description height of 4.5 to 6 metres and has a dense, bushy growth habit as in photograph
The leaves are glossy and green with creamy white flowers that form into small round edible fruit Ripe when red.
Adaptable to a wide variety of soil types, tolerates frost and is drought hardy. It can tolerate some shade and is an excellent medium strata, early secondary agroforestry support/crop species for tropical or sub-tropical climates.
Seed Propagation & Growing Notes
- Strawberry guava seeds are best sown soon after removal from the fruit. Sew these seeds as soon as you can for best germination rate.
- seed prefer warm soil temperatures of 21C or above for germination. Sow into pots using seed raising mix.
- 4-12 weeks to germinate, depending on soil temperature and moisture levels.
- grows best in well-draining soil that is slightly acidic with pH between 5.5 and 6.5. They can tolerate a wide range of soil types.
- water regularly while establishing.
