Travellers Palms are unique and impressive plants with enormous paddle-shaped leaves, in a distinctive fan-shape aligned in a single plane.
The large white flowers point to its relationship to the the bird-of-paradise flowers, but are generally considered less showy with a green bract.
Originates from Madagascar.
Prefers rich moist well-drained soil in a protected sunny warm position. Often used as a feature piece in front yards and businesses.
Drought and frost tender.
Although seeds can be sown throughout most of the year across much of Australia, to be safe, it is generally best to sow seeds in spring or autumn, avoiding the coldest and hottest parts of the year.
The seeds are naturally covered in a vibrant blue skin. They have not been treated.
- Soak in water for 2 days removing any skin remaining on the seed. Change water daily.
- Sow the seed 6-8mm deep.
- Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
- Maintain heat, germination will be extended by cool temperatures.
- Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
- Germination generally occurs in around 30 days in the right conditions but may take longer in cool conditions.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded. Our seeds naturally germinate under the mother plant without any of the care recommended above.
