Seedlings, which have sprouting tiny leaves in late winter or early spring, will grow with small leaves in summer.  Fruits will appear in autumn or early winter.

Goji Berry is a key ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is still widely used in Asia in Chinese cuisines and medicines.    It is native to the Himalayas, and is widely grown in Ningxia and Inner Mongolia province in China, where it has been used for thousands of years.   Its biological name is Lycium barbarum and its berries have a juicy taste comparable to cranberries or tangy plums.

Goji Berry is a sprawling shrubby vine that lives for 5-8 years. The fruits are small and shiny red with oval berries about 1cm long with lots of small edible seeds in the center.

Goji berry plants prefer a sheltered sunny spot with good drainage.  It can grow into a shrub 2.5m high and wide, responds well to pruning after fruiting which helps to keep its sprawling habit under control.

The fruit is esteemed in Chinese medicine for many reasons.  It is said to boost the immune system as the fruits are very high in antioxidants and vitamin C and A. It is also said to benefit the liver, kidneys and eye function.
