(Plantago coronopus) Italian heirloom also known as ‘Erba Stella’ or ‘Bucks Horn Plantain’ dating back prior to 1586. Widely used during this time in a typical Italian salad mix called ‘misticanza’ which consisted of a mix of wild & cultivated leaves and also as a medicinal green for reducing fevers. Perennial. A hardy cold weather salad green able to grow well through winter and tolerate moderate frost. An attractive small plant to 20cm high showing long, slender, green leaves with small ‘horns’ resembling a deer’s antlers (hence the name) along the side of the leaf. Pleasantly mild, nutty flavour & crunchy texture. Easy to grow. Best harvested when leaves are young. Add to salads & stir-fry or use as a garnish
