Magnolia × soulangeana, the saucer magnolia, is a hybrid plant in the genus Magnolia and family Magnoliaceae. It is a deciduous tree with large, early-blooming flowers in various shades of white, pink, and purple. It is one of the most commonly used magnolias in horticulture, being widely planted in the British Isles, especially in the south of England; and in the United States.
Growing as a multistemmed large shrub or small tree, Magnolia × soulangeana has alternate, simple, shiny, dark green oval-shaped leaves on stout stems. Its flowers emerge dramatically on a bare tree in early spring, with the deciduous leaves expanding shortly thereafter, lasting through summer until autumn.[2]

Magnolia × soulangeana flowers are large, commonly 10–20 cm (4–8 in) across, and colored various shades of white, pink, and maroon.

Magnolia × soulangeana can be propagated  from sowing seed in spring or autumn, either directly in the ground or in pots. The red flesh of the seeds can be removed by soaking them in water and then using mesh wire or a cloth.  Cover the seeds with about 1/4 inch (0.5 cm.) of soil and keep the soil moist until your seedlings emerge.  Seedlings should appear in four to six weeks but may occasionally take much longer.

Since this is a hybrid, it needs to be propagated from cuttings. Seed is viable but cannot be relied on to grow true to type.

Hi there, my baby dog has sadly passed, and we have an urn with her ashes and want to grow a tree from it. We are in Melbourne and wondering if you think buying these seeds might work?
With thanks, María.

HI Maria – Sorry to hear the sad news. Magnolia (Soulangeana) should be tough enough to grow in Melbourne once it gets through the 1st year and becomes acclimatized to Melbourne’s winter. Suggest you keep it indoor or the sunroom for at least the 1st year. Hope that helps.
