When left to mature and dry, the gourd can be easily peeled revealing a fibrous hollow sponge. This can be further dried in the sun to be used as a natural sponge.
The young gourd, young shoots and leaves are also edible and cooked in many parts of the world.
Young gourds when cooked (peeled) have a soft texture, one of my favourite vegetables.

This plant is a vining plant and grows best in warm temperatures. My plant is growing up a tree and is fruiting for the third time. Fruits can get huge, upwards of 20cm.
