The Giant Spear Lily is a frost tolerant and drought tolerant Australian plant native to the forests of southern Queensland and New South Wales. It features a large rosette of sword shaped leaves, up to 1.5m long. After several years (13-20) a spear, up to 5m long, emerges from the centre of the rosette and in the following months will develop a mass of red flowers. This spear will curve, and is similar to but distinct from the Gymea Lily (Doryanthes excelsa), which has a shorter straight flower spike.

After flowering the plant dies, leaving new plants (pups) around the base of the original rosette. Given the extremely long time for this plant to flower and reproduce, seeds are difficult to obtain.

You will receive at least 25 seeds. The best germination rate is achieved through the following method:
Soak the seeds overnight in lukewarm water by placing them in a thermos or Yeti cup of warm water and sealing the lid.
Fill seed trays or pots with a well-draining seed starting mix and then plant the seeds at a shallow depth of 3-5mm (1/8 inch). Place the trays or pots in a warm shady or indoor location. The temperature required for germination is 18-22C.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination may take several weeks to a few months.
Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of leaves, you can transplant them into individual containers or directly into the garden.
