Climbing Snake Bean (Vigna Unguiculata Var. Sesquipedalis) – Red Dragon seeds
Cherry's gardenWALLSEND, New South Wales, Australia
$5.00
The Red Dragon variety of snake bean produces abundant, tender green pods up to 70cm long on climbing vines, best for fresh eating. The mature seeds are reddish-brown in colour and around 1cm long. Snake beans are also sometimes called yardlong bean, pea bean, long-podded cowpea, Chinese long bean, snake bean, bodi, and bora. This variety is very productive, and fresh pods (ideally picked when around the thickness of a pencil) are more tender than the black-seeded variety.Â
This packet will contain 15+ good quality, hand-selected seeds collected in the same year of sale, during January and February. Snake beans are self pollinating, and only one variety (Red Dragon) was grown in the gardens, ensuring all seeds will grow true to type.Â
Seeds are untreated, heirloom and open-pollinated; all will grow true to type.
Snake beans can withstand warmer weather than common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and in good years, plants have produced beans from October to February though they slow down during the height of summer. Ideally, they should be sown directly into the ground in early spring.
Germination rates in damp paper towel have consistently been above 95% if seeds are used within the first year.
