Gomphocarpus fruticosis

This plant is also called swan or balloon plant.

Monarch butterfly caterpillars exclusively use milkweeds as their food.

Attract some monarchs in your garden with these plants that have stunning foliage and seed pods.

SEED PODS SHOULD BE REMOVED AFTER FLOWERS DROP TO PREVENT THIS SPECIES BECOMING WEEDY.

Sowing instructions:

Only very lightly cover seed, as light helps with germination. Seed germinates at temperatures above 20°C.

Plant information:

Seedlings emerge 15-30 days after sowing.

Plants grow to 1.8m tall and 1m wide (depending on pruning for shape).

120-130 days to maturity to set flowers and seed pods.

Small plants should be netted during warmer months to prevent them from being eaten prior to being established, mature plants.

Requires soil temperatures above 22C

Approx 40 seeds in a packet.

Hi there
I have been looking at the photo provided of Asclepias linaria : Pine Needle and the leaf is thicker than the linaria I have seen. Can you assure me of their type please and just to let you know the seeds were under quantity….not by much.

I will carefully grow and let you know if actually Pine Needle Asclepias.

Thank you
Glenyss

Hi Glenyss,
Sorry that I’ve only just seen your message: I don’t appear to have received an alert that you had commented on. I’m sorry about the under quantity seeds: I always double-check my seed packets, but this one must have escaped me. I have sent you an additional pack your way.
Regarding the classification, I have since reclassified it as more likely to be Gomphocarpus physocarpus. Thank you for the heads up.
Kind regards,
Cultivate

Hi Daisy
Gomphocarpus cancellatus or cape milkweed can be grown all year round. May 2024 the pods will develop and seeds will form in a few months. Plant outside and no special requirements needed. Stratifying or smoking. Put pots in a lidded plastic tub to keep warm especially in the Hills. I use compost or mix of SRM & coir with a base of organic mulch/leaves….put seeds on top press down and cover lightly with vermiculite. Keep moist…can be transplanted in most soils within a sunny spot. Hardy long living plant with beautiful pinkish purplish whiteish flower. Floss can be kept once seeds are ready…the floss can be used in a number of ways eg soap or paper making HAPPY GARDENING

Sadie there is no quick remedy…just need to grow more milkweed. I recommend you grow the Strangler Vine..fast growing and large leaves. Cut back to feed your caterpillars. They have massive avocardo sized pods which is great for craft. Hope you find this helpful. MM4Seeds

Is this Tall Thin Swan Milkweed and if it has swan shaped pods it’s Gomphocarpus fruticosus and not physocarpa/us which is also Tall Thin Round Shaped pods or Balloon Plant Hairy Balls. Fast growing but short life span. Hope this is helpful for customers looking for Milkweed varieties. MM4 Seeds Local
