Beta vulgaris
150+ seeds, sow in spring, summer and autumn
A biennial (needs to grow through one winter) leafy green to 50cm high and wide. A spinach substitute that does better in hot weather. A hardy, cut and come again green well suited to Australian conditions. Cutting out flower heads will extend the harvest further.
A variety of Swiss chard, with fine green stems. Provides leafy greens all year round. Its flavour is mild and very much like English spinach, but may taste a little like silverbeet in older leaves. Younger plants are great for baby leaves in salads. Can be cooked like spinach / Asian greens at any stage.
Seeds can be sown directly in a prepared bed or raised in trays or pots. Readily self seeds.
Other names: spinach beet
