Melaleuca viridiflora – Weeping Red Paperbark seeds

Farm Plants and Seeds

Queensland, Australia

100 seeds, Australian Native

A lovely tough ornamental Australian small tree, drought hardy and ornamental, perfect for an Australian backyard or Street planting.
Flower colour is usually cream, but sometimes, rarely, can be pink, red or purple.
Found naturally in swamp or estuaries in coastal QLD and NSW, but will happily thrive anywhere with 600mm+ rainfall. The Essential oil of this plant has a wonderful ‘cooling’ affect, good for inflammation around injury. (I have some inflammation problems with an injury. I tried some Niaouli Essential oil diluted in olive oil (Melaleuca quinquenervia) and had terrific results)

Shrub or small tree usually growing to 10-20m tall, sometimes twice that height, with white, brownish or grey bark and an open canopy.  The flowers are cream, yellow, yellow-green or occasionally red or purple.

The seeds were collected from a paperback growing at Moore Park Beach near Bundaberg Queensland. They grow along the sandy shoreline there. But they grow well all around Australia – very tough and hardy. There’s been major drought for the past nine years, this one is a little worse for wear, as you can see from the photos, its had major insect damage. However it’s still flowers and sets seeds easily.

I have noticed seeds collected from plants growing locally, tend to germinate and establish as seedlings much quicker and more easily than if you obtain seeds of the same species from a different local, not saying you won’t have success with other seeds from different locals, but you would usually get 100% success rate if it’s local seed, just a little thing I’ve noticed as a Gardner.

For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo. Happy to answer any questions you may have.
