Marigold ‘Sparky Mixed’ – Tagetes patula, French Marigold

15x seeds

A low growing widely cultivated annual, suitable as an edging plant. Originating in Mexico. Flowers come in various combinations of reds, oranges, and yellows, with thousands of different cultivars. Some people regard Tagetes patula same as Tagetes erecta – Mexican Marigold
The leaves of all species of marigold have potent oil glands and are pungent. The essential oil is being investigated for antifungal activity, including treating fungal infections in plants, aswell as repelling bedbugs / fleas / ticks. Potent oil, which can eat through plastic. When I started gardening, all the books said to plant this, as a healthy companion plant. So I had it all throughout my garden, it was very easy to grow from seed, fairly drought hardy, and the good bugs liked it, plus if I bothered to dead head the spent flowers, they bloomed all spring, summer, autumn. When sadly I had to leave my huge wonderful garden and move to Queensland {albeit enjoying the rainy weather now} but the one plant to keep popping into my mind, that I miss, with this one! {out of all of them!!} – that fresh pungent smell is what I really miss, I suspect it’s because there are possible fungal problems up here around my new place, but I’ve already sown some trays of Marigolds, to plants around!
The dried and ground flower petals are edible in small quantities, with probable medicinal benefits. Known as ‘imitation saffron’ in some places, the spice imparts a unique, rather earthy flavour, compatible with the flavours of cinnamon and cloves.
The plant is used in companion planting for many vegetable crops. Its root secretions are believed to kill nematodes in the soil and it is said to repel harmful insects, such as white flies on tomatoes, but the experts think that is an old wives tale!
Will grow in most well drained, moderately fertile soils, anywhere in Australia, but does need a full sun location to perform to its best, though a little shade is still well tolerated.

For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Seeds are usually collected from tree/plant shown in photo. Happy to answer any questions you may have.

And my seller promise; if you purchase from me, I will send it to you.
I use recycled packaging. And I make a note of sending more seeds than stated in page listing. Plus I’m a definite advocate for ‘organics’ as much as possible, there are no pesticides at my place!
